In 2013/14 under the leadership of Governor Emmanuel Katongole, Rotarians in Uganda conceived the idea of building another blood bank at Mengo Hospital to complement the existing National Blood Bank in Nakasero.
The estimated overall project cost was US$ 1,305,219. This covered construction of the Blood Bank at US$ 856,000, fundraised through local initiatives, while equipment and training of staff worth US$ 449,219 was secured through a Rotary Foundation global grant.
The Blood Bank processes and dispatches approximately 1,500 units of blood per month and serves all hospitals in Uganda. This contributes to 38% of the blood requirements within the Central region of Uganda.
There is a need to acquire an automated grouping machine estimated at US$ 235,000, a large component separation centrifuge, and replication of the program in up country regional hospitals.
