Rotary District 9213 Governor Gerald Obai joined the tree-planting initiative at Nakanyonyi Secondary School in Kalagi, Mukono District, where 3,500 trees are being planted across four acres of land donated by the school and the Church of Uganda.
The initiative is being implemented through a partnership between My Tree Initiative and Equity Bank Uganda.
The tree-planting activity was officiated by Minister for Public Service Rtd. Gen. Katumba Wamala, alongside Equity Bank Uganda Managing Director Gift Shoko, District Governor Gerald Obai and Ministry of Water and Environment Commissioner Eng. Sowed Sewagudde.
DG Obai highlighted environmental protection as an important part of Rotary’s commitment to creating healthier and more sustainable communities.
“When the environment is not taken care of, we cannot fulfil our goal of creating a better place for everyone. Rotary is happy to be part of this initiative and will mobilise Rotarians to support and be part of it.”
Rtd. Gen. Katumba Wamala commended the initiative and called on young people to take an active role in protecting the trees beyond the planting day.
“I urge all young people to lead the initiative and ensure the trees survive by planting, protecting and nurturing them. This must not end at school; continue the initiative even at home.”
The initiative contributes to Equity Bank Uganda’s commitment to plant more than 200,000 trees by December 2027 across 10 districts, supporting wider efforts to restore Uganda’s environment.
