In the bustling city of Jinja, within the quiet grounds of Spire Road Primary School, stands a place where hope shines brightest for those born without sight. For more than three decades, the Balitwegomba Home for the Blind has nurtured, educated, and empowered children with visual impairment—ensuring that they, too, can dream, learn, and thrive in a world that often overlooks them.

In the heart of Kapir Sub-County, Ngora District, a new chapter in education has begun. Standing tall amidst the gentle fields of Eastern Uganda is the Agirigiroi Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD), a beacon of hope and learning for the youngest minds.
Opened in Rotary Year 2022/23, the Centre today bustles with the energy of 165 pupils—76 boys and 89 girls—who arrive each morning eager to learn, play, and dream. Behind their progress are five dedicated teachers and three support staff, quietly shaping the foundation upon which these children’s futures will be built.

Do You Know About the Little Hearts Project - That is Giving Children a Second Chance?

Seven-month-old Kadenya Harmony from Kigumba District, one-and-a-half-year-old Okileng Aphluis from Bukedea, and fourteen-year-old Mwesigwa Rahim from Wakiso may come from different parts of Uganda, but they share one painful reality: congenital heart disease. Together with 22 other children across the country, they needed lifesaving heart surgery—treatment they could not access locally. Thanks to Rotary’s intervention, these children are now able to receive the much-needed surgeries at Amrita Hospital in Kochin, India.

RC Kasangati and the Shared Love schools: The Story of Makukuba- Mukono district.

Posted by Sophie Bamwoyeraki on Sep 19, 2025
In 2008, AG Moses Ssebaggala, a social worker, together with members of his organisation, Shared Love, was invited to Makukuba Village in Nabbale, Mukono District to speak about parenting and to share the word of God. Through door-to-door visits and interaction with parents, the team uncovered a troubling reality: girls, some as young as thirteen, were being married off to much older men. Shocked and deeply disturbed, they decided to carry out a survey across more than 200 homes, focusing on family structure, health, marriage, education, and income.

The findings were devastating. The illiteracy rate stood at over 86%, largely because the community lacked a nearby school.

Later, while away in Kapchorwa on a working trip, Moses received tragic news. Two children from Makukuba Village had drowned in a flash flood while walking six kilometres to the nearest school in Nakifuma. The incident ignited a wave of grief and determination. The community resolved to act.

With the support of Shared Love, friends, village leaders, and parents, they rallied resources to build a school. Using papyrus reeds and eucalyptus poles, they constructed a shelter that housed two classrooms. On opening day, the sight was overwhelming: 300 children turned up, eager to learn. The school began with nursery and primary one classes — a humble beginning, but a powerful step toward transforming Makukuba’s future.

The Runner's Dawn

On the 31st, the air on the last day of August tasted of endings and anticipation. For one soul it was not an end, but a crescend, a final powerful chord struck before the turning of the page. The sun had not yet claimed the sky over the race route. In the cool pre-dawn grey, a different kind of light was gathering. It was the light of purpose. Thousands of feet, thousands of hearts, all beating a singular silent drumbeat: Enough. No more.

This was the Rotary Cancer Run 2025. And I was not just in it; I was for it

Cancer run

By Aldrine Nsubuga Sr

I wasn't supposed to run. For two weeks now, I walk uncomfortably and sit on a knife edge. The pain in my left leg is excruciating.  Something to do with tightened nerves in my left hip. Medical attention is not helping and so am on therapy; for now. The cancer run which has become annual is however an event that touches me personally. A long time close friend of mine is a victim and so I always make it a date to run for her. Not even a sick leg could rule me out today.

RYLA 2025 - The Curtains Come Down

Posted by Maureen Kawombe on Jun 18, 2025
The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) 2025 for District 9213 was a transformative leadership development program held under the theme "Passion, Action, and Reaction in Leadership." From January 10-12, 2025, at Kaazi Camping Grounds, 240 youth from 60 Rotary Clubs across Uganda participated in a dynamic three-day boot camp featuring leadership masterclasses, team-building challenges, skilling workshops, and community project design.

The program was elevated by a historic visit from Rotary International President Stephanie Urchick, who emphasized digital literacy and communication, and an inspiring address by Hon. Dr. Balaam Barugahara, encouraging youth to drive national development. With sessions on self-discovery, emotional intelligence, financial literacy, and adaptability in the age of AI, RYLA 2025 empowered participants to become innovative and resilient leaders, culminating in impactful social project pitches showcased at the 100th District Conference.

The WAVE - May 2025

What do you hope to achieve during your term?

My role as the District Governor is to consolidate what I’ve always wanted to do in the community and inspire others to do more than what I’ve achieved as an
individual. And inspire clubs to do different projects. Remember, we are 130 clubs; if each of those touched five communities, that is touching over 500 communities. So, one of the things I want to do is inspire clubs to touch as many communities as possible. We’ve always had the Governor come up with a project, but most times that project dies with the year. But when you work with the clubs, these clubs stay in these communities for more than five years, and the impact is much, much greater. So that is one of my roles.

Uganda is an Amazing Rotary Country

Uganda is an Amazing Rotary Country, says Rotary International President Stephanie Urchick

Rotary International President Stephanie Urchick has described the blood bank at Mengo Hospital as a shining example of Rotary’s vision and “a model of doing good in the world”. She said blood donation addresses a perennial need, helping communities and saving lives.

Urchick, who arrived in Uganda on Sunday on a week-long visit, toured the Rotary Blood Bank as the first of several impactful Rotary projects that she is scheduled to visit while in the country. She encouraged individuals to donate blood. “If you are a regular blood donor, you lower the risk of heart attack and stroke,” she said. “So, giving blood not only helps others, but is a good thing for us as well. It is my honour to see the great work that you are doing.”

The Rotary Blood Bank was established in 2017 in response to persistent blood shortages in the country, which were previously managed solely by the Uganda Blood Transfusion Services (UBTS). The project was spearheaded by Past Rotary District Governor Emmanuel Katongole, now Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Rotary Blood Bank.

Dear Rotarians,

I would like to share some thoughts on an important topic that has been discussed in our Rotary community: how can we scale our impact through larger, more significant projects?

My daughter, who works in digital marketing, collaborated with an agency where her responsibilities included identifying influencers to promote various products. Each time they launched a new product, she would ask for my input on potential influencers. However, her final decisions were always guided by their brand and digital footprint—specifically, their number of followers which demonstrates their reach and effectiveness.

This trend underscores a crucial truth in today’s world: numbers matter.

RC Kasangati Tear Gas Issue 14

It is not an uncommon scenario to find a man/boy sitting alone all by himself, often in their bedroom, outside on the balcony, under a tree, just walking alone on the streets or spending long hours at the workplace, on the digital gadgets (computers, phone, PS), social places like bars. This is always misinterpreted to demonstrate ‘strategic thinking for the family’ by the man/boy

Additions & Multiplications

Dear Magicians, It has been 31 days since we embarked on a commitment to advance the Magic of Rotary in
our Communities. I congratulate you all on the Achievements made so far and implore you to focus on the task ahead of us.

What an exciting journey of leadership July has offered! It has been possibilities and lessons all the way. Cheers to the few obstacles we have overcome. They manifested right in the format we had anticipated in our Plan.

Dear Rotaractors, you have made it so easy and simple for the District to offer leadership so far. You are undoubtedly a Magical Army.

In the previous Month, I have been privileged to visit 17 Clubs and witnessed the Magic they are creating already. I am happy about the systems we have created in our Clubs, the Plans and the commitment to creating impact in every endeavour.

Sustaining the Magic!

Welcome to the New Rotary Year!

It is both an honor and a privilege for me and the dedicated Magic Team to lead our district through the Rotary year 2024-25. Like all of you, I am incredibly excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and the achievements we aim to realize during this special year of the Magic of Rotary.

Building upon the successes of “Creating Hope,” our focus remains steadfast: to ensure the sustained delivery of the Magic of Rotary, not just for the coming year, but for generations to follow. However, it is important to recognize that while it may appear effortless, creating true ‘magic’ in our clubs and in communities requires dedication and concerted effort from all of us.

Posted by Dianah Kagere on Jul 01, 2024
The Rotary Club of Sonde embarked on a heartwarming initiative today 1st July as one of the Magical Year inaugural activity, taking over St. Charles Lwanga Bukerere Cerebral Palsy School for a day of engagement with the children. This launch marks the beginning of a long-term partnership between RC Sonde and the school, aiming to significantly improve the lives of children with disability in Sonde community.

The school is a learning point for over 35 children with cerebral Palsy, and other forms of disabilities from the communities surrounding the school including Sonde and Bukerere.
Rotarians spent the day with the children through a mix of learning activities, playful interactions, and shared meals, fostering a spirit of connection and joy.
Investing in the Future
The partnership extends far beyond a single day of engagement. The Rotary Club of Sonde has committed to a long-term vision for St. Charles Lwanga Bukerere Cerebral Palsy Center. The club plans to focus on the key areas including

  • Improved Infrastructure: The club has committed to the completion of the school’s classrooms and expansion, ensuring the school has adequate space for learning and development.
  • Specialized Education: The club through the Ministry of Gender, labor and Social Development (Disability) will be supporting the school to access qualified teachers experienced in special needs education.
  • Assistive Devices: The club is also looking for Disability partners to ensure the school accesses essential assistive devices to empower the children and enhance their learning experience.
  • Regular Therapy: Additionally through Ministry of Gender the club has reached out to request for regular therapy sessions for children with cerebral palsy and ensure these crucial interventions are readily available for children who need them.

Donations:

The club has also donated assorted items including food, toiletries, and beddings worth over two million and seven hundred thousand Uganda shillings among others to boost the school’s food pantry.

Out to Lunch: Why you may consider investing in Rotary

About 15 years or so ago, a friend asked me whether I could help them do some voluntary work. There was somebody visiting Uganda and there could use some of my skills. I was invited for a meeting over lunch at the Grand Imperial Hotel in Kampala.

The meeting turned out to be a lecture of sorts where a speaker on a lectern makes a presentation followed by questions and answers from the plenary. A high table of sorts existed where somebody had a bell and wearing a chain pinned with golden miniature plaques.

Many of the people at the lunch hour event wore suits and all the kind of clothing that is considered acceptable in corporate offices. I could recognize a few public faces — captains of their respective industries.

I congratulate you, fellow Rotarians, on completion of the first quarter of RY2021-22. It has been a learning experience, but also gratifying for me on my official visits to clubs. I remain indebted to the Chairs of the projects that showcased activities namely Sam Owori Rotary Vijana Poa Village, RI - USAID WASH Program, Rotary Centenary Bank Cancer Center, Maternal and Child Health Program, Empower Girls Initiative, Rotary Mengo Hospital Blood Bank, and Rotary Peace Center-Makerere University.
