RC Kasangati and the Shared Love schools: The Story of Makukuba- Mukono district.![]() In 2008, AG Moses Ssebaggala, a social worker, together with members of his organisation, Shared Love, was invited to Makukuba Village in Nabbale, Mukono District to speak about parenting and to share the word of God. Through door-to-door visits and interaction with parents, the team uncovered a troubling reality: girls, some as young as thirteen, were being married off to much older men. Shocked and deeply disturbed, they decided to carry out a survey across more than 200 homes, focusing on family structure, health, marriage, education, and income. The findings were devastating. The illiteracy rate stood at over 86%, largely because the community lacked a nearby school. Later, while away in Kapchorwa on a working trip, Moses received tragic news. Two children from Makukuba Village had drowned in a flash flood while walking six kilometres to the nearest school in Nakifuma. The incident ignited a wave of grief and determination. The community resolved to act. With the support of Shared Love, friends, village leaders, and parents, they rallied resources to build a school. Using papyrus reeds and eucalyptus poles, they constructed a shelter that housed two classrooms. On opening day, the sight was overwhelming: 300 children turned up, eager to learn. The school began with nursery and primary one classes — a humble beginning, but a powerful step toward transforming Makukuba’s future. |

The Runner's Dawn![]() By Loise Kasha Konga On the 31st, the air on the last day of August tasted of endings and anticipation. For one soul it was not an end, but a crescend, a final powerful chord struck before the turning of the page. The sun had not yet claimed the sky over the race route. In the cool pre-dawn grey, a different kind of light was gathering. It was the light of purpose. Thousands of feet, thousands of hearts, all beating a singular silent drumbeat: Enough. No more. This was the Rotary Cancer Run 2025. And I was not just in it; I was for it |

RYLA 2025 - The Curtains Come DownThe Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) 2025 for District 9213 was a transformative leadership development program held under the theme "Passion, Action, and Reaction in Leadership." From January 10-12, 2025, at Kaazi Camping Grounds, 240 youth from 60 Rotary Clubs across Uganda participated in a dynamic three-day boot camp featuring leadership masterclasses, team-building challenges, skilling workshops, and community project design. The program was elevated by a historic visit from Rotary International President Stephanie Urchick, who emphasized digital literacy and communication, and an inspiring address by Hon. Dr. Balaam Barugahara, encouraging youth to drive national development. With sessions on self-discovery, emotional intelligence, financial literacy, and adaptability in the age of AI, RYLA 2025 empowered participants to become innovative and resilient leaders, culminating in impactful social project pitches showcased at the 100th District Conference. The WAVE - May 2025What do you hope to achieve during your term? My role as the District Governor is to consolidate what I’ve always wanted to do in the community and inspire others to do more than what I’ve achieved as an individual. And inspire clubs to do different projects. Remember, we are 130 clubs; if each of those touched five communities, that is touching over 500 communities. So, one of the things I want to do is inspire clubs to touch as many communities as possible. We’ve always had the Governor come up with a project, but most times that project dies with the year. But when you work with the clubs, these clubs stay in these communities for more than five years, and the impact is much, much greater. So that is one of my roles. |

TIPS ON WRITING PRESS RELEASESWRITING PRESS RELEASES: TIPS FOR ROTARIANS WHAT IS A PRESS RELEASE?
WHY SHOULD CLUBS PREPARE PRESS RELEASES?
|
PRESS RELEASE TEMPLATENEWS RELEASE [INSERT Headline: Attention grabbing summary of key message] Example: Rotary in Uganda to plant 1 million trees [INSERT city and date followed by a dash then insert lead; the lead should hold the attention of reader and communicate what’s at the heart of the press release, usually a response to a societal problem; don’t simply repeat the headline] Example: JINJA, 10 July 2024—Rotarians in Uganda are planning to plant 1 million trees in the next three years in a bid to promote ecological balance and protect the environment. [INSERT back-up to the lead. Provide some details that begin to the answer the 5Ws (what, when, where, who, why) and H (how)] Example: This was revealed by District Governor Anne Nkutu as she launched the “Plant Your Balance” campaign, an initiative of Rotary Districts 9212, 9213, and 9214, which cover Kenya, Uganda, and Uganda and Tanzania respectively. [INSERT more details that answer the remaining Ws and H as well as contextual questions: So what? Who cares? Why does this matter? What’s at stake?] |

Uganda is an Amazing Rotary CountryUganda is an Amazing Rotary Country, says Rotary International President Stephanie Urchick Rotary International President Stephanie Urchick has described the blood bank at Mengo Hospital as a shining example of Rotary’s vision and “a model of doing good in the world”. She said blood donation addresses a perennial need, helping communities and saving lives. Urchick, who arrived in Uganda on Sunday on a week-long visit, toured the Rotary Blood Bank as the first of several impactful Rotary projects that she is scheduled to visit while in the country. She encouraged individuals to donate blood. “If you are a regular blood donor, you lower the risk of heart attack and stroke,” she said. “So, giving blood not only helps others, but is a good thing for us as well. It is my honour to see the great work that you are doing.” The Rotary Blood Bank was established in 2017 in response to persistent blood shortages in the country, which were previously managed solely by the Uganda Blood Transfusion Services (UBTS). The project was spearheaded by Past Rotary District Governor Emmanuel Katongole, now Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Rotary Blood Bank. ![]() |

The Wave - November 2024 Edition![]() Dear Rotarians, I would like to share some thoughts on an important topic that has been discussed in our Rotary community: how can we scale our impact through larger, more significant projects? My daughter, who works in digital marketing, collaborated with an agency where her responsibilities included identifying influencers to promote various products. Each time they launched a new product, she would ask for my input on potential influencers. However, her final decisions were always guided by their brand and digital footprint—specifically, their number of followers which demonstrates their reach and effectiveness. This trend underscores a crucial truth in today’s world: numbers matter. |
